Microsoft Movie Maker 2.1

There's no point forking out extra money for software if you've already got something sufficient installed on your computer. And if you're just starting out, it's well worth giving the Movie Maker software a go, as it comes pre-installed on every Windows XP computer.

With its handy wizard, capturing video from your camera is a breeze. The editing option is sophisticated enough to offer either thumbnail or timeline editing, and the workflow is organised in a simple collapsible menu system, so it doesn't overcrowd the screen. For free software, this also has a reasonable collection of basic transitions, effects and title options, more than good enough to get most people going.

It's not without fault though, and we found it had some issues importing video we'd grabbed from elsewhere and it couldn't be used to create a playable DVD. However, since the latest version comes bundled with Windows XP Service Pack 2, it would be bonkers not to try it out before forking out for something else – it could well be all you need, at least while you get started.

Movie Maker 2.1 is available for download with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). You can download SP2, Movie Maker 2.1, and all future critical updates automatically by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP.
You can also download SP2 and Movie Maker 2.1 from Microsoft Update. If you cannot use Automatic Updates or download SP2 via Windows Update, order a CD.

DDClip Free

DDClip Free is another homegrown video editor, this one from SoftLab-NSK, a multimedia company headquartered (apparently) in Russia. Its interface is a bit difficult and this product is really aimed at the geeks among us, but it's free and that's the best thing about it. SL openly admits that this version is no longer supported and they'd like you to go with one of their "retail" versions. I didn't download or test this product, so I can't really comment. Again, let the buyer beware, and so on.
